Atlassian Rovo vs Microsoft 365 Copilot: which AI assistant fits your team?

Atlassian Rovo and Microsoft 365 Copilot are emerging as the two dominant AI assistant layers for enterprise teams, but they solve different problems and suit different stacks. Here's a practical comparison for Australian IT buyers.

Enterprise AI assistants are no longer a novelty purchase. Atlassian Rovo and Microsoft 365 Copilot are now the two most seriously evaluated AI layers for Australian enterprise teams, yet the decision between them is less obvious than vendor marketing suggests. Both products have matured significantly since their initial releases, and both carry real trade-offs that shape whether they're worth the licence spend.

What each product actually is

Atlassian Rovo is an AI-powered knowledge and search platform built specifically around Atlassian's product suite, including Jira, Confluence, and Jira Service Management. Rovo searches across connected applications, surfaces institutional knowledge, and provides AI-generated answers grounded in your team's own content. Its Rovo Agents can take actions inside Atlassian products, automating tasks like triaging Jira issues or summarising Confluence pages. The product targets teams who already live inside the Atlassian ecosystem.

Microsoft 365 Copilot, by contrast, is woven into the full Microsoft 365 fabric: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint. It generates content, summarises meetings, drafts emails, and answers questions grounded in your Microsoft Graph data. For organisations where Microsoft tools are the primary workspace, Copilot integrates at a level Rovo can't match in that environment.

Where they diverge in practice

The most important distinction isn't features. It's what they treat as the source of truth. Rovo treats your Confluence pages, Jira tickets, and connected SaaS applications as the primary knowledge graph. Copilot treats Microsoft 365 content, your emails, documents, and Teams conversations, as the ground truth. Rovo makes the most sense for software development and product teams running primarily on Atlassian tooling. If your engineers live in Jira, your documentation lives in Confluence, and your code reviews happen in Bitbucket, Rovo's contextual search and Agents produce answers that Copilot simply can't, because Copilot doesn't natively understand Jira ticket structure or sprint velocity data.

Copilot is the clearer choice for organisations where Microsoft 365 is the dominant platform. Legal, finance, and HR teams spending most of their day in Word, Excel, and Outlook will see more immediate returns.
