The PS5's DualSense controller is the most technically ambitious gamepad Sony has shipped. Two features sit at the core of that claim: haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Both get mentioned in every PS5 review, but the explanations usually stop at "it rumbles differently" and "the triggers push back." That sells the technology short, and it also glosses over the real gap between games that use these features brilliantly and games that barely touch them.
What haptic feedback actually is on DualSense
Traditional rumble motors spin an offset weight to shake the whole controller. DualSense replaces those with two high-fidelity actuators, one under each grip, driven by dedicated audio signals. Sony calls them linear resonant actuators. The key difference is precision: the controller can produce localised sensations in the left grip, the right grip, or both simultaneously, at different intensities and rhythms.
In practice, this means a developer can simulate the texture of a surface under a character's feet. Sony's DualSense page describes it as "immersive tactile technology," which is accurate but understated. In Returnal, rain hitting the controller feels genuinely different from the kickback of firing a weapon. In Astro's Playroom (which ships pre-installed on every PS5), sand, snow, and metal surfaces each produce a distinct sensation under the same walking animation. The effect is subtle enough that it doesn't announce itself. It disappears into play, which is the point.
The actuators also handle audio feedback. Low-frequency game sounds can be routed directly into the haptic system, so a bass-heavy explosion registers in your hands a fraction of a second before the speakers respond. Most players don't consciously notice this, but it widens the sense of immersion.
What adaptive triggers actually do
The L2 and R2 triggers on DualSense contain small motorised mechanisms that can dynamically change resistance mid-press. There are three basic modes a developer can set: no resistance (standard press), a tension point at a specific position in the travel, or a full progressive resistance that builds as you press further. In reality, developers combine and layer these modes continuously.
In Gran Turismo 7, braking at speed builds progressively more resistance until the tyres lock up, at which point the trigger goes slightly slack. It's a genuinely useful signal. In Horizon Forbidden West, pulling a bowstring creates a building resistance that snaps at full draw. In Demon's Souls, the triggers simply vibrate to signal certain weapon states. Each implementation reflects a different design priority.
The triggers run on a separate processor inside the controller, not the PS5's main CPU. That matters because it keeps adaptive trigger latency low, around 1 millisecond for resistance changes, even when the console is managing intensive workloads elsewhere. It also means the triggers can be updated independently via firmware without touching game code.
Which games use these features best
Astro's Playroom remains the benchmark three years on. Housemarque's Returnal is arguably the best implementation in a third-party title, treating haptics as a difficulty-adjacent feedback system rather than a party trick. Gran Turismo 7 from Polyphony Digital uses adaptive triggers as genuine driving telemetry. God of War Ragnarök applies both features sparingly but precisely, and the game is better for the restraint.
Not every studio has invested the engineering time. Open-world games with hundreds of interaction types often default to a single haptic preset and standard trigger resistance, because mapping every surface and action to a bespoke sensation takes development resources most studios don't allocate. If you're weighing up PS5 exclusives in 2026, haptic implementation quality is one of the underreported gaps between the best titles and the middling ones.
Accessibility and battery trade-offs
Both features draw more power than standard rumble. Sony's own estimates put battery life at roughly 6 to 12 hours depending on haptic intensity and trigger resistance in use. With both features running at full intensity, expect the lower end of that range. Users who find the trigger resistance physically uncomfortable (it's a real consideration for players with hand pain or reduced grip strength) can reduce or disable adaptive triggers in the PS5 accessibility settings without losing any game content.
Haptic intensity can also be lowered per-controller in settings. Some players turn haptics off entirely for competitive play, particularly in first-person shooters, where the additional controller vibration during firing can marginally affect aim consistency. The DualSense's internal sensor accuracy is high enough that this matters at skilled play levels.
How the PS5 Pro handles these features
The PS5 Pro ships with the same DualSense design as the original console. Sony did not upgrade the haptic actuators or the adaptive trigger mechanism for the Pro release. The difference is on the console side: the Pro's faster GPU can render physics simulations at higher fidelity, and some developers have patched their games to feed more granular physics data into the haptic pipeline as a result. In titles like Gran Turismo 7, this produces subtly richer trigger feedback during traction events. It isn't a dramatic change, and it doesn't factor significantly into whether the upgrade makes sense for most players.
What third-party controllers miss
No licensed third-party controller as of mid-2026 fully replicates both the haptic actuators and the adaptive trigger mechanisms at the same fidelity as DualSense. Several controllers from Razer and Nacon include their own haptic systems, but these use different actuator designs and don't receive the same haptic audio signals from the PS5's API that first-party controllers do. Some implement a simulated trigger resistance via passive spring tension rather than active motors.
For players prioritising these features specifically, the original DualSense and the DualSense Edge remain the only full implementations. The Edge adds remappable buttons and swappable stick caps, but the haptic and trigger hardware is identical to the standard controller.
These features aren't universally loved. Some players find them distracting, others find the trigger resistance fatiguing on long sessions. But in titles built deliberately around them, they do something no prior console controller has managed: they add information rather than just atmosphere.
