PS5 rest mode problems: what's actually going wrong

PS5 rest mode is one of Sony's most convenient features, but it's also one of the most reliably complained-about. Here's a plain-language breakdown of why things go wrong and what actually fixes them.

PS5 rest mode is supposed to be seamless: close the lid, walk away, come back to a console that's downloaded updates and charged your DualSense overnight. In practice, it's the single feature that generates the most complaints from PS5 owners worldwide. Corrupted databases, random restarts, HDMI handshake failures, and games that won't resume properly are all well-documented symptoms. The frustrating part is that Sony has never officially acknowledged the cause.

What rest mode actually does

When you put a PS5 into rest mode, the console drops to a low-power state that still runs a handful of background processes. It stays connected to the PlayStation Network to receive system updates and game patches, continues charging any controllers plugged into its USB ports, and optionally keeps power flowing to USB devices. It doesn't fully shut down the operating system. That background activity is exactly where the problems start.

The PS5's custom SSD is fast enough that cold boots take under 30 seconds, which makes rest mode less essential than it was on older hardware. But the convenience of resuming a game mid-session is genuinely useful, and background downloads are still the primary reason most players keep rest mode on.

The most common rest mode failures

Database corruption is the most serious. It happens when the console loses power unexpectedly during a rest mode write cycle, leaving the system database in a partially written state. The symptom is a PS5 that boots to a blue light loop, hangs on the startup screen, or throws a CE-108255-1 error. The fix is to boot into Safe Mode and run the "Rebuild Database" option. It takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on how much is stored on the drive, and it won't delete your games or saves.

Random restarts during rest mode are a separate issue. Most reports trace back to one of three things: a power supply under load from USB charging, a network activity spike triggering a background process that crashes, or a conflict with the HDMI-CEC signal from a connected TV. HDMI-CEC lets your TV control the console's power state, and some TV firmware implementations send unexpected wake or shutdown signals. Disabling HDMI Device Link in the PS5's System settings resolves this for most users.

Failed game resumes are less alarming but more annoying day-to-day. Some games simply don't support rest mode resumption reliably. Open-world titles with persistent online components, such as certain live-service games, are the worst offenders. The game can't reconcile the session state after a network timeout occurs during rest. Closing the game before putting the console into rest mode, rather than suspending mid-session, is the only reliable workaround for affected titles.

USB and power delivery issues

The PS5 offers two USB-A ports on the front and a USB-C port, plus additional ports on the rear. In rest mode, the front USB ports deliver power for controller charging. What many players don't realise is that leaving a third-party peripheral or a full-size USB hub plugged in during rest mode can draw enough current to cause instability. Sony's DualSense charges without issue, but unrecognised devices pulling irregular current loads have been flagged repeatedly in community reports.

If your PS5 exits rest mode unexpectedly, unplug everything except the DualSense cable and test for a week. It's a tedious diagnostic, but it isolates the problem faster than any software fix. Rest mode and the internal SSD

One underappreciated factor is the relationship between rest mode reliability and M.2 SSD expansion. Adding a third-party M.2 drive is a popular upgrade, and most compatible drives work without issues. But rest mode write cycles now touch two storage devices, and a drive that runs marginally hotter than the SSD's thermal threshold can cause intermittent errors that only appear after extended rest periods. If rest mode problems started after you added an M.2 drive, check that the heatsink is fitted correctly and that airflow around the expansion bay isn't blocked. Should you just turn off rest mode?

Some players disable rest mode entirely after a bad experience and never look back. Given how fast the PS5 boots from a full shutdown, it's a reasonable call. Background downloads still queue up while the console is powered on, and most game patches complete in minutes on a decent NBN connection anyway.

If you want to keep rest mode but minimise risk, three settings make a meaningful difference. First, disable "Stay Connected to the Internet" unless you specifically need background downloads overnight. Second, set "Supply Power to USB Ports" to "Off" if you don't charge peripherals during rest. Third, disable HDMI Device Link as mentioned above. These three changes together address the majority of reported rest mode failures without requiring a full Safe Mode rebuild.

Sony has pushed several system software updates since the PS5 launched in late 2020, and rest mode stability has improved incrementally. System software version 24.x, released in late 2025, addressed a specific crash related to background game installs interrupting rest mode entry. If your console is on an older firmware version, check for updates under Settings before assuming hardware is the problem.

When nothing else works

If rest mode issues persist after trying all of the above, Safe Mode option 7 (Reset PS5) is the nuclear option. It wipes the console to factory state but leaves saves intact if they're backed up to PS Plus cloud storage or a USB drive. Before going that far, it's worth logging a case with PlayStation Support in Australia. Sony replaces consoles showing persistent database corruption within warranty without requiring proof of a specific defect.

Rest mode problems don't point to a fundamentally broken console in most cases. They reflect a feature that asks a lot of consumer hardware: background networking, USB power management, storage writes, and HDMI signalling, all running unsupervised while you sleep. Getting the settings right once removes the problem for the vast majority of players.
